Where to begin

Two inhabited islands, one barrier reef, a lot of empty cays.

Almost everything sold here leaves from Providenciales. Grand Turk is a 25-minute flight and a different century. In between: Grace Bay, the mangrove channels, the iguana cays and forty miles of reef wall.

Clear hulls

The clear kayak is what Turks and Caicos invented for itself.

The water off Provo is three feet deep and lit from below, so a transparent hull turns the paddle into the attraction. Four ways to do it, what each costs to board, and which one suits a camera.

Providenciales

Provo is small, flat and organised around one beach.

You can drive the island end to end in forty minutes, which is why nobody plans around distance here. The decisions are which stretch of water to spend the morning on, and whether you want a boat, a hull you can see through, or a golf cart.

The beach question

Grace Bay, or the quiet end

2–4h· from $60· no swell

Grace Bay is the twelve miles the island is famous for and the water barely moves. Long Bay and the south shore get the wind and the kite schools. Most beach trips run the calm side and stop at a sandbar on the way back.

The private option

A boat and a captain, for the day

4–6h· from $1,400 a group· up to 8

Split between six or eight people a private charter often lands near the price of a shared seat, and you choose the cays. Half-day runs cover the reef and one sandbar; full days reach the far cays and the wreck.

Getting around

The golf cart is the local car

24h+· from $110 a day· licence needed

Provo runs on carts and everyone drives on the left. It is the cheapest way to reach the far beaches and the fish fry on a Thursday night, and the four-seaters go first in high season.

What it costs

What a day out in Turks and Caicos actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Almost nothing here comes in under $50 a head, and the boat is where the money goes, so the question is which one you spend it on.

Under $50

Tram tours on Grand Turk, shared airport runs, a seat on a snorkel boat that is already going.

$50–150

The standards: half-day snorkel trips, clear kayak tours, parasailing and the sunset sail.

$150 and up

Private charters, drone photoshoots, jet-ski wreck runs and the full-day cruises with lunch aboard.

Grand Turk

Grand Turk is seven square miles and a wall that drops 7,000 feet.

The capital island runs on donkeys, salt ponds and a reef you can swim to from the beach. When a ship is in, the excursions all fire at once; when one is not, you have Cockburn Town to yourself.

Under the surface

Bleached coral is the story elsewhere. Here the wall still holds.

The reef sits close enough that half the snorkel trips are back before lunch. Eagle rays on the drift, a freighter aground in eight feet of water, and grouper the size of a dog on the wall off Grand Turk.

Only here

Three things Turks and Caicos does that nowhere else can.

Sun and sand are everywhere in this sea. Water clear enough to paddle a glass boat over, an aerial photograph industry built on it, and an island of protected rock iguanas are not.

Glass bottoms

The Clear Kayak

The banks off Provo run three to six feet deep for miles, over white sand and turtle grass, with nothing suspended in the water to cloud it. Somebody put a polycarbonate hull on that and the whole island followed. Turtles, southern rays and conch pass underneath you the whole way, and the mangrove channels behind the cays stay flat when the trades are blowing outside.

From two hundred feet

The Drone Photoshoot

Shallow water photographs from above better than anything else in travel, and operators here have turned that into a proper product: a licensed pilot, a stretch of empty bank, and forty minutes of directed shots. Sunrise gets the flattest water and no other boats in frame. Edited images come back within the week.

A cay of their own

Little Water Cay

The Turks and Caicos rock iguana lives nowhere else on earth and about two thousand of them hold Little Water Cay, ten minutes from Leeward marina. Boardwalks keep feet off the nests, the animals are entirely unbothered by visitors, and almost every kayak and boat trip out of the north shore makes the stop.

Book ahead

Four bookings here that will not wait for you.

Most of this country can be sorted from a bar stool the night before. These four run on moon phases, cruise schedules, sunrise light and a rental fleet that is smaller than the demand.

  1. 013 hour Glow Worm Sunset Cruise from ProvidencialesThe worms swarm on a handful of evenings after each full moon and not at all in between. The calendar decides, not the operator.
  2. 02Gibbs Cay Stingray and Conch Dive AdventureGibbs Cay runs off Grand Turk, and the boats fill on cruise-call days. Pick a day with no ship in port and you may find nothing running at all.
  3. 03Clear Kayak Photoshoot in Turks and Caicos Islands ProvidencialesSunrise is the only slot with empty water and no glare, and there is exactly one of those a day. They go weeks out in high season.
  4. 04Drive GDT – Golf Cart RentalsProvo has a fixed number of carts and no way to add more mid-season. Christmas and Easter weeks are gone months in advance.
When the trades get up

January wind can close the reef for three days. Have a plan on land.

The Christmas winds run through the winter and the barrier reef takes the swell first, which means snorkel boats sit at the dock. The island is still forty minutes end to end: take a cart down the south shore, get on a trail, or fly over to Cockburn Town where the lee side stays flat.
